During my 35+ years working in various libraries I have found some interesting items that people used as bookmarks. Or maybe they put things inside the book for safekeeping and forgot about them. I’ve discovered family photos, receipts, tax bills, seed packets, and even money slipped between pages.
I have a few old family Bibles that housed special mementos: a lock of hair from the baby’s first haircut, a wedding napkin, graduation and baby announcements, newspaper clippings, etc.
I recently found a charge card stashed inside a discarded library book. It was issued by S. Kann Sons Co. in Washington, D.C. But it was only valid thru May 10, 1948, and it wasn’t signed. But it’s in perfect condition even though it’s not made of plastic.
What unusual thing have you found tucked inside a book?
